Game Night

Jul 11, 2017 1:01:57 PM

Game Night

As an adult we seem to get caught up in the daily grind. Between work, school, kids events and the endless things to do before going to bed each night then having to get up to do it all over again the next day. A lot of us forget the small things or just think we lack the time for rest, relaxation and a little fun.

As a child I would spend countless hours playing games inside or outside. I don't ever remember a time that I was truly bored. If it was nice we would be outside from just after breakfast until the first street light came on and if we were lucky we would get 20 extra minutes to play ghosts in the graveyard or flashlight tag with the neighborhood kids before we were called in for the night. On the days that we couldn't get outdoors we would head to my house to raid the game closet. Back then we would play Trouble, Sorry, Life, and an array of card games like Uno and War.

Trouble Sorry

I think that's why as an adult I still am fascinated with them and find myself making time at least once a week to play one. My favorites now being Cribbage and Monopoly, once in a while we will dust off the Trouble box.

All games promote some type of learning. They teach us everything from counting to letter recognition at a young age, to social and strategy skills when older.

Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning image

Spring has finally arrived and with that comes spring cleaning your home! Sometimes it's hard to get the family involved so here are some fun cleaning games you can play to get the kids involved and they won't even realize they're cleaning!

#1: Turn on the music! Who doesn't get moving when some fun music starts? Put some old socks on the kiddos and have them dance around the house gathering dust bunnies as they go.

#2: Help the younger kids practice their letters by alphabetizing the spice rack.

#3: Give two or more of the kids a cleaning rag and play Follow the Leader. The ones following have to do everything the "leader" does.

#4: Have them play a sorting game with their toys making sure all toys go together in labeled storage containers with other like toys. Take them to donate toys that they don't want or play with anymore.

#5: Collect loose change that is lying around your house and have them count it while sorting it into piles. If there is enough change, have them open a savings account in their own name!

The ideas are endless to help get your kids involved and teach them to participate around the house as well!

Question Mark

Have fun and happy cleaning!!

Spring break fun!

Mar 9, 2017 12:43:17 PM

With Spring Break right around the corner, a lot of families head to a warmer climate but if your family is like mine (stuck in the cold!) you have to think of places and ideas to keep your kids busy right around the area where you live.

A great place to take your family is The Building for Kids Children's Museum in Downtown Appleton, WI. It's a place filled with interactive exhibits the whole family will love, plus the kids won't even realize they're learning too!

Another cool stop is Discovery World in Milwaukee, WI. The place is packed with so many exhibits to see and get your hands into that everyone will be sure to have a great time.

If it's a rainy day that may keep you at home, there are so many fun games or crafts that will entertain and keep kids busy for hours! (Check out your local Learning Shop or visit us online for our selection!)

So, no matter what you do or where you go, remember to enjoy your family time, relax, and smile!

I Am the Craft Queen!

Feb 27, 2017 2:04:54 PM

The Craft Queen

Here at the Learning Shop, I have been given the title as the Craft Queen but long before I started here I used to care for my four cousins ranging in age from 1 to 9. We always enjoyed crafting and making silly things out of anything they had laying around the house. However, one of their favorite days of the month was nail day. We would set up a make shift nail spa and drag out all the polish and the toothpicks (so I could make dots and lines). They would make up a design or show me something on Pinterest (most of the time those were fails because their finger nails were so short) but had I known there were handy tools and kits awaiting for me it would have saved me a whole lot of time and several thousand, "WAIT DON'T TOUCH! THEY AREN'T DRY!"

So when changing career paths, the "Nail Day" kinda stuck when I found out that we carry a wide variety of great nail art kits. The kits include everything you would need to give your nails a style kick from fun colors with brush/pen sides, charms, tools, books full of ideas, and even glitter. (Oh glitter, how I love to hate you!) I now take 30 minutes to have my nail day once a month (or more if there is time to give my fingers some life!) Have fun and craft on!

Family Game Night!

Family Game Night!

Let's be honest, we love our families no matter what. What better way to spread the love than with a family game night?!

Having a weekly or monthly game night is a great excuse to play ridiculous games, eat pizza (or your family's favorite food), laugh a lot, and spend time with the people who know you the best! There are many different games that are fun for all ages. Here are a few of our favorites!

Mobi is a fast-paced math equations game with similar game play to the popular game Bananagrams. Connect all of your tiles the fastest to win the game! It also comes in an adorable travel-sized pouch that's shaped like a whale.

Happy Salmon

This game will have your family up and moving in this energizing twist on a matching game! Each person gets dealt an even number of cards and the object of the game is to get rid of your cards the quickest by matching with other people with the same card and completing the action. You will need to give high-fives, switch places with another player, give fist bumps, and pretend your arm is a salmon (check out our Happy Salmon video to see what we mean!)

If you're a board game fan Alias is a great pick! The object of this game is to get the other players on your team to guess as many words as possible on your card (without saying the word) before the time runs out! This game is similar to the classic game Taboo but with a board game twist!

What is the Learning Shop

If you've seen our Appleton location, you may have asked yourself, "Is the Learning Shop a daycare?" From the outside, it may look like it with the vibrant colors and lots of shapes but the answer is no, we are not a daycare. The Learning Shop is a specialty toys and educational products retail store geared towards sparkling up the world of the children in the home and school environments! Not just fun toys...but fun specialty toys with an educational edge.

 Learning Shop grand opening

The Learning Shop actually began back in the 70's as a teacher supply store and now has grown into 5 locations throughout Wisconsin and two gift shops located in Milwaukee and Appleton. We've also shifted our focus from only carrying educator supplies to arts, crafts, games, LEGOS®, and so much more! We also pride ourselves on excellent customer service. There is always a friendly face around to help you search out that awesome toy or spectacular birthday gift. Plus, we gift wrap for FREE, so there is no need to make an extra stop for wrapping paper!

We hope you stay connected with us and enjoy our new blog as we delve into the funderful world of toy stories, fun things to do in and around the community, guest bloggers, and more!
